From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

Kapow! Holy supermarket superheroes Batman!

Now here's something you don't see everyday...

A group of people dressed as Batman, Robin, David Hasselhoff and a giant Smurf turned have-a-go heroes during a night out in Musselburgh after the boy-wonder of the group was assaulted.

The bizarre incident, which was recounted by East Lothian Police in a trio of increasingly surreal tweets, began when a man dressed as Robin was assaulted on Eskview Road in Musselburgh just before 20:00 on Friday.

The attacker soon found he had messed with the wrong group of fancily-dressed persons however after they gave chase through the Eskview Road Tesco store before becoming involved in a short scuffle in the toilet roll aisle.

A 21-year-old man was arrested and later admitted the attack in court.

The incident came to light after East Lothian Police tweeted about it.

"Thank you to Batman, Robin, Robin's Dad, a Smurf, and the Hoff for helping us on Friday night. #Tesco, sorry about the toilet roll aisle," the force tweeted.

Another tweet read: "Robin assaulted, police called, collective assisted our foot chase, minor upset to shelving in Tescos during arrest, you couldn't script it!"

A Police Scotland spokesman told the BBC: "A 21-year-old man was arrested and charged in connection with an assault in Eskview Road, Musselburgh, on Friday 1 November.

"He was remanded in custody until Monday 4th November, where he appeared in court and pled guilty to the offence."
