A pensioner has died after being crushed by a car against a caravan on a Scottish campsite.

The 65-year-old man, who has not been named, is believed to have been standing next to the caravan when he was hit by a Daihatsu Terios 4x4.

The accident occurred at the East Balthangie campsite near Cuminestown in Aberdeenshire at 8.35pm on Sunday.

Fire crews freed the man, who is believed to be from Dunbartonshire, using airbags but he died from his injuries shortly after.

Police cordoned off the area as collision investigators examined the scene and interviewed holidaymakers.

The pensioner’s widow was with him at the caravan when the accident happened.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “At about 20.35 on Sunday, July 21, Police Scotland, Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and the ambulance service were called to a caravan and camp site at East Balthangie, Cuminestown, Turriff, where a 65-year-old male pedestrian had been struck by a car. The pedestrian died from his injuries at the scene.

“Police Scotland are making inquiries into the circumstances.”
