From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. A scaffolder who was mocked by an artist on Instagram for “having one GCSE” has called on her to apologise.

Hetty Douglas, 25, received a backlash on Twitter after a photo she had taken emerged of three men queuing in McDonald’s with the caption: “They look like they got 1 GCSE”.

Warren Butt, one of the three men in the photo, called on her to apologise for making them “look like idiots”.

The father-of-one from South London told The Sun: “It's not very nice. It's made us look like a load of idiots when we are just trying to crack on and do some work.

"I would like an apology. I do not think it's right she can take a picture of us without us knowing and say that.

“I'm just working - just earning a living for me and my son."

However, one of Ms Douglas’ friends told MailOnline the situation had painted a “polite, well-mannered girl” in a bad light.

“They were being rude and swearing at those youngsters working behind the counter and Hetty thought they were out of order,” the friend said.

“I’m sure the builders would just dismiss it as banter but they were unkind and intimidating. They thought they were funny but no-one else was laughing.

“Hetty is actually a very nice, polite well-mannered girl and she didn’t like what she was watching. It was bullying to her mind so she thought she would take these lads down a peg or two."

Ms Douglas’ father Maurice Douglas, a builder from Cornwall, said: “She would be very angry with me if I was to speak to you.

“I’d love to defend my daughter but the less anyone says the sooner it will hopefully all blow over.”

She has taken down her Instagram page since the backlash.
