From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

A commuter has been branded a “hero” after he intervened to defend a woman’s right to breastfeed on the London Underground.

As part of a social experiment by YouTube pranksters Trollstation, a male actor named James Slattery was seen berating a breastfeeding mother in front of shocked onlookers.

The woman, played by Amina Maz, attempted to defend her actions by saying “my baby needs to eat” but the irate man grew more and more hostile, saying: “I don't want you to do it in front of me. Could you not express before you came on here?”

“I just feel uncomfortable with it, please I'm asking you nicely, please maybe do it on the next carriage…Why should she be allowed to expose herself like this?” he added.

Breaking the unwritten rule that commuters do not speak to one another on the Tube, a couple who were totally unaware they were being filmed then intervened to tell Slattery that the breastfeeding mother had “done nothing wrong” and requested he leave the breastfeeding woman alone.

“Why don’t you move onto the next carriage?” another woman asked.

With Slattery ignoring the onlookers and continuing to complain, one man decided enough was enough and moved to sit between him and Maz as a way of defending her from the rant

Moments later Trollstation revealed the situation was a set-up and lavished praise on the unidentified man for bravely intervening to defend the woman.

Although he looked a little embarrassed and branded the incident “intense”, the hero revealed that he worked in the mental health sector so simply considered it part of his job to calm the irate man down.
