Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

People are desperately searching for their loved ones who have been missing since the Grenfell Tower fire.

The London Fire Brigade confirmed that at least 17 people died in the blaze and many others currently remain unaccounted for.

Children are believed to be among those who are currently missing as reports suggest hundreds of people were in the 24-storey building at the time of the fire.

Rania Ibrham

The mother of two small children, Rania Ibrham, 30, uploaded a Facebook Live video while she was stuck in her flat on the top floor.

She is seen in the footage seeking help in the smoke-filled corridor of the block before going back into her home and looking down on the street below from her balcony.

Jessica Urbano

Images of 12-year-old Jessica Urbano, who lived on the 20th floor, have been shared across social media.

She is approximately 5ft tall and apparently last spoke to her mother when she borrowed a phone and told her she was on the stairs with other people.

There have been unconfirmed reports of sightings and some suggestions she was put into an ambulance.

Hesham Rahman

Hesham Rahman, 57, lived on the 20th floor of the tower block and has been missing since the fire broke out.

He suffers from diabetes, which makes it difficult for him to walk and last contacted his family around 3am when he told them he could smell smoke, according to Sky News.

Tony Disson

Sixty-five-year-old Tony Disson, a great grandfather, remains missing after he found himself trapped in his 22nd floor flat as the fire ripped through the block.

Mr Disson had desperate phone conversations with friends and relatives from his flat, during which he told a friend: “Tell my sons that I love them."

He was reportedly trapped in the bathroom of his flat in the early hours of Wednesday morning, telling friends he couldn't escape because the floor was too hot.

Ali Yawar Jafari

Ali Yawar Jafari, 82, lived on the 10th floor of the tower. His son, Hamid Ali Jafari, said his father lost contact with his mother and sister as they left the flat.

The younger Mr Jafari said he had been to several rescue centres but has had no news.

“My neighbour said he would hold him and bring him down. But when I got outside I realised Isaac wasn’t there.

“I have been to all the emergency centres, all the hospitals and there is no news of him.

“I just want help, anyone who has any information can they please come forward.”

Lucas James

Twelve-year-old Lucas James has not been seen by his family since he went to stay the night at a friend's house on the 17th floor of the block

His older sister, who asked not to be named and lives in Grenfell Tower with their mother, said she fears her younger brother may have died.

Recalling the events of Wednesday morning, she said: ''My mum heard some shouting, she heard people screaming help help help. She looked out the window and saw the fire coming round to our side.

''Firemen helped us out, but my brother was visiting a friend on the 17th floor and he did not get out. We cannot find him. We've been going round hospitals.''

Khadija Saye

Khadija Saye, 24, is an artist who is currently displaying her artwork in the Venice Biennale. She was on the 20th floor with her mother Mary Mendy, who is thought to be in her 50s.

She is a close friend of Nicola Green, Labour MP David Lammy’s wife. Ms Green said: “We're desperately trying to communicate with all the hospitals.

“We're told some people have been rescued up to the 19th and 20th floor. She was on the 20th floor. Nobody has any information at this point.”

Raymond “Moses” Bernard

A family friend confirmed that Raymond Bernard, known to friends as Moses, remained missing after the fire.

He lived in flat 201 with a 53-year-old woman called Karen Bernard.

Mariem Elgwahry

Ms Elgwahry lived on the 19th floor of the tower block and is said to be missing with her mother.

She spoke to another friend in the tower block – who was since confirmed safe – at around 2.30am but hasn’t been heard from since.

Dennis Murphy

Dennis Murphy apparently called his nephew while trapped on the 14th floor of the building and hasn’t been heard from since.

There has been no news from any centres or hospitals about Mr Murphy’s whereabouts.

Anthony Disson

Known as Tony, the 66-year-old is reported to have last been in contact with his family at around 3am while inside the building.

Lee Disson, Tony's son, posted an appeal for information on Facebook and said he was “still praying for him”.

He is reported to have lived on the 10th floor and his wife Cordelia and his four sons have been searching for him in hospitals.

Mohamednur Tuccu

Mohamednur Tuccu, his wife Amalahmedin and his three-year-old daughter are all missing after they came to visit relatives in Grenfell Tower, his employer said.

"Mo is a part of the family. He will have been with us for 10 years next month and is due to be awarded his decade milestone. We all just want to hear that he is okay," Mr Tuccu's manager, chief executive of Red Consultancy Mike Morgan, told Sky News.

Mohamed Neda

Mohamed Neda’s family are currently severely injured in hospital and apparently desperate to find out where he is.

Mr Neda was reportedly on the top floor of the building trying to help people during the incident but has not been heard from since.

Abdulaziz Wahabi, wife Faouzia and children Nurhouda, Yassin and Medhi

The family of five lived on the 21st floor of the tower and were in contact with the fire brigade and seen waving out of the window during the incident.

Hana Wahabi, Mr Wahabi’s sister, told reporters: “I rang him and the fire had not reached the top of the block at that point.

“He said he had been told to stay inside, stay in one room together and put towels under the door.

“I told him to leave. He said he was going to come. Then I called him and he said there was too much smoke.”

Gloria Trevisan and Marco Gottardi

The Italian couple recently moved into the 23rd floor of Grenfell Tower.

They haven’t been heard from since the fire, when Ms Trevisan apparently called her mother in Italy.

“I don't have no news from them since last night and their mobile phones are off,” Mr Gottardi's cousin wrote on Facebook.

“I'm praying to God they make it out safely.”

The Met Police has set up a helpline for anyone concerned for their loved ones. It is 0800 0961 233.
