Jehovah Pembele was recovered from the Grand Union canal and taken to hospital after police were called to reports of the missing youngster in the West Cotton Close area of Northampton just before 6pm on Saturday.
Officers joined family members and local residents to search for Jehovah, known to family and friends as Giovani. His body was found 30 minutes later in the canal.
Paramedics attended the scene and the boy was taken to Northampton General Hospital and later transferred to Glenfield Hospital in Leicester, where he died in the early hours of yesterday.
Northamptonshire Police are working with the family to establish the circumstances leading up to the death.
A force spokeswoman said they are not treating the death as suspicious as it is thought the boy fell into the canal.
