A vegan woman was left “shocked” after finding a live frog in a head of lettuce she had just bought from a supermarket.

Shevaughan Tolputt, 37, from Cornwall, purchased the lettuce from her local Aldi only to find the amphibian crawling in it after she took it out of the fridge at home.

Ms Tolputt, who said she was "trying to be a vegan", said she could "see the funny side of it".

"I was shocked...I peeled off the outer layers of the lettuce and there it was, of all the things I was not expecting that," Ms Tolputt told the BBC.

In reference to being a vegan, Ms Tolputt joked that that she would have to “avoid any protein like that”.

She said that after finding the creature, she and her husband released it into a field next to a stream.

Aldi provided Ms Tolputt with a 36p refund and said it would investigate how the amphibian got into the lettuce.

It is not the first time Ms Tolputt has received an unwanted surprised after purchasing food from Aldi.

She claimed she discovered a stone in some beef soup she bought from the supermarket in March.

An Aldi spokesperson said: “We’re sorry to hear of Ms Tolputt’s experience and have offered her a full refund.

“This type of incident, while incredibly rare, can naturally occur with fresh produce.”
