London Fire Brigade said six fire engines and around 30 firefighters went to the Athenaeum Hotel on Piccadilly in Mayfair.
A spokesman said that a small part of the basement was alight.
Around 150 people were evacuated from the hotel.
The fire brigade was called at 7.21am. The cause of the fire is not known.
The spokesman said later that it was thought the fire would soon be under control. One person was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.
