From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Fears were today growing for a young man who vanished in the freezing weather.

Adam Passfield, 22, was last seen at 2.30am on Saturday morning in Chelmsford, Essex, after an evening out with members of the Heybridge Swifts Football Club.

Essex police said that officers, family and friends have been trying to contact Mr Passfield on his mobile telephone, but without response.

Yesterday marine unit officers started to scour the River Chelmer which flows through the town centre.

Police also began searching gardens and outbuildings as well as tracing Mr Passfield's possible routes home.

"Residents in and around the town centre can assist with our search by looking in their outbuildings or sheds just in case Adam has taken shelter there during this cold weather," said investigating officer, DI Stuart Truss.

Mr Passfield is described as white, approximately six foot tall, of slim build, has short, straight brown hair and was wearing jeans, trainers and a red-chequered shirt with a black leather jacket.
