From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.A father-of-two is half the man he used to be after shedding more than 12 stone in less than a year.
Prior to shedding half his body weight Adam Moffat, 44, gorged on pies, cakes and daily double rolls crammed with sausages.
He would scoff cakes with breakfast and lunch and would even sneak in a kingsize Mars bar before dinner.
But now, he has cut bread and cakes out of his diet completely and instead dines on salads and vegetables with fish.
The lorry driver from Penicuik, Midlothian, was inspired to start his weight-loss journey after his wife showed him a picture of a family friend who had lost weight.
Adam was tired all the time and struggled to keep up with his young daughters Hannah, 13, and Holly, nine.
He also suffered from high blood pressure and sleep apnea.
He said: “It feels absolutely great to have lost so much weight. I felt as if when I was bigger people kept looking at me. It is just nice to feel sort of normal again.
“I now take my younger daughter shopping and it's quite funny because I need to buy new clothes each time. I started off as 4XL, then 3XL, 2XL and now I am a medium/large.
“Also comparing my old sizes of t-shirts compared to now shows a real difference of how much weight I have lost.”
The dramatic weight loss came after strictly following the Cambridge Weight Plan which was tailor made to suit his individual needs.
His 800-calorie-a-day diet consisted of shakes, soups and sachet meals which were all provided by his consultant.
His daughters offered moral support as they both attended the majority of Adam's weight plan appointments in the nearby town of Loanhead.
Hannah said that her family burst into tears when her dad finally reached his target weight of 13 stone.
She said: “At his first weigh-in he had lost 21 pounds, he just about fell off the scales he was in shock.
“It was a standing joke throughout his journey that he would give the plan another week but in total my dad has lost 12 stone and two pounds in 31 weeks and I'm super-proud of him.
“When dad hit his target of 13 stone - we burst into tears. Then we jumped around with excitement for him.”
His wife Margaret, who is also now a Cambridge Weight Plan consultant, weighed the same amount of weight that her husband lost. At that point it was nine stone one pound.
The 40-year-old said: “It's been quite a year - he's lost a whole person, his doctor couldn't believe it. It's also done wonders for his confidence.”
