Fifty firefighters battled a blaze on the sixth floor of a tower block in Edmonton, north London.

Ten fire engines were sent to the block of flats in North Mall following dozens of 999 calls because of its “very visible” nature, London Fire Brigade (LFB) said.

Clouds of smoke were seen billowing into the air.

The cause of the fire was unknown, the brigade said.

Crews were sent from stations in Tottenham, Chingford and Southgate at 17.39pm, it added.

The fire was brought under control by 7.10pm.

An LFB spokesperson said: “Part of a four-bedroomed flat on the sixth floor was alight.

“Crews wearing breathing apparatus led one man to safety through an internal staircase and around 50 residents left the block before the arrival of the brigade.”
