Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

A crowdfunding campaign has been set up to grant a dying boy his final wish to be buried next to his mother in Poland so she can “look after him in heaven”.

Filip Kwansy has been living in Great Ormond Street Hospital in London since being diagnosed with a form of leukaemia last year.

But after months of treatment, which has included a stem cell transplant and chemotherapy, the cancer has now spread to his intestines and liver so his doctors can now only give him palliative care.

Now the seven-year-old’s final wish is to be buried next to his mother who died aged 33 in her home village of Wadowice, southern Poland, in 2011 when he was just two.

His father, Piotr Kwasny, is now trying to raise the estimated £6,500 he needs to take his son’s body back to Poland to be laid next to his mother.

He told the Daily Mirror: “He says that I’m his angel that is looking after him here and that his mum will look after him when he is in heaven.

“I don’t know how well he remembers his mother, as he was so young when she passed away, but he has visited her grave when he was well enough to speak to her.”

Mr Kwasny suffers from spina bifida, one kidney, diabetes and hypertension himself so is unable to work and cannot afford the burial.

He said as it stands he will need to take his son back to Poland by himself as he does not have the money to pay for Filip’s stepmother and siblings to go with him to say a final goodbye.

“Filip wants to be buried with his mother, so we will need to organise that locally and re-bury them together. He wants her to look after him.

“This is just a very stressful and distressing time for all of us. I did not imagine that I would have to bury my child... you should go before your child," he said.

He said Filip struggles to breathe because his abdomen is full of fluid and pushes on his lungs and he cannot eat without throwing up.

“He is either drowsy or screaming in pain. It’s heartbreaking for me to watch,” Mr Kwasney added.

The JustGiving campaign has currently raised over £11,000 in just 24 hours.

Despite struggling to speak, Filip thanked everyone who donated to his cause.

He said: “Thanks for helping make my wish come true.”
