Cupcake the Siamese cat had her owner, Julie Baggott, searching high and low after she vanished from their home in Cornwall.
After putting up posters and scouring the local area for the family pet, after more than week went by she assumed her gone forever.
Little did Ms Baggott realise, but she had actually posted her beloved feline 260 miles to West Sussex.
While packing up a box of DVDs to be sent, inquisitive Cupcake had apparently jumped in the box for a snooze.
The shocked customer got more than they bargained for after they opened up the package, and Cupcake emerged.
Grove Lodge Veterinary Hospital, who posted the incredible story online, said: “Anyone who shares their life with a cat knows that cats love boxes.
“Large or small, put a box on the floor and it's not long before it is being thoroughly investigated by your feline friend, who then assumes occupation, despite your best efforts to reclaim your box for its intended purpose.”
Despite spending eight days trapped in the box, the kitty had miraculously survived the journey although was extremely dehydrated.
The de facto owner called the RSPCA, and a vet from Grove Lodge came and collected the unwitting parcel.
They continued: “Imagine how surprised the recipient was when, along with the anticipated DVDs, an elegant Siamese cat emerged from the box.
“This person was somewhat startled as they were not expecting to receive a free cat along with their order of DVDs.
“The serious side of this incredible journey is that poor Cupcake was extremely dehydrated and has required intensive treatment to ensure she recovers fully.”
Luckily, when they scanned the moggy they discovered an up-to-date microchip, so were able to contact her owner.
Delighted Ms Baggott told the BBC: “When I realised she was missing, two weeks ago, it was the most horrible, scary feeling.
“We looked everywhere for her. I feel terrible about what’s happened, you know.
“I mean, I put everything in the box and I sealed it straight away, so I don’t know how she managed to get in there.
“It was a miracle she was alive, she’s managed to survive that awful ordeal.”
Cupcake made a full recovery and has since been collected by Ms Baggott and returned home to Cornwall.
