The 18-month-old boy, from Reading, Berkshire, fell at the Chia Laguna Resort shortly after 7pm local time (6pm BST) yesterday.
He was taken to hospital in the island's capital, Cagliari, where he was pronounced dead, police said.
Police said the little boy's parents were getting changed when the toddler fell.
A spokesman said: "They were changing clothes and the child was alone.
"He walked onto the balcony and the room was on the first floor.
"They do not know what happened but the child fell down from the balcony."
He was taken by ambulance to Brotzu Hospital, in Cagliari, the police spokesman said.
"When he arrived at the hospital, he was dead," he added.
The spokesman said police were investigating the little boy's death but no arrests had been made.
A Foreign Office confirmed said: "I can confirm the death of a British child after falling from a balcony on August 15."
She said the child's family were being given consular assistance.
Relatives at the family home in Tidmarsh said the tragic news had not yet sunk in.
Brad's uncle Stuart Kremer, who lives nearby, said it was very sad and the family did not wish to make any further statement.
