The collision happened on a busy road in the Longsight area of the city during the school run, shortly before 8.30am on Tuesday.
The boy was taken hospital in a serious condition after Greater Manchester Police (GMP) officers and paramedics arrived at the scene on Plymouth Grove, close to St Chrysostom’s Primary School.
No arrests have been made, although a driver remained at the scene after the collision to help police with enquiries.
Photos taken at Plymouth Grove on Tuesday showed officers examining a car behind a cordon, with two buses also in the area taped off by police.
The North West Ambulance Service initially indicated the injured boy was aged 7, but police later confirmed he is 12.
A spokesperson for GMP said: “Approximately 8.30am this morning, officers were called to a report of a road traffic collision involving a grey coloured Fiat Punto vehicle and a 12-year-old boy on Plymouth Grove.
“The boy was taken to hospital in a serious condition. A driver remained at the scene to assist the police with their enquiries. No arrests have been made.”
GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit has asked for any witnesses to the collision, or anyone who may have dash cam footage, to get in touch.
