A teenage schoolboy went on trial yesterday accused of talking his girlfriend into a suicide bid that left her in a coma.
The 15-year-old played truant with his girlfriend, also 15, in January and they spent the afternoon together drinking tequila, a jury at Swansea Crown Court was told. The teenagers from Aberystwyth cannot be named.
The boy denies aiding, abetting, counselling or procuring another to commit suicide.
The court was told the schoolboy allegedly encouraged her to make a suicide bid. She wrote and signed a suicide note before jumping into the sea.
A spokesman for the Crown Prosecution Service said: "They had to send out a lifeboat to rescue her and she had since suffered brain injury. The effect of the suicide bid was to leave her in a coma, which has since led to brain damage."
The trial was adjourned until tomorrow.
