From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

A bid to set a new world record for the number of women being photographed wearing bikinis in one place failed today.

Organisers of the attempted record busting Bikini Beach Bash 2 said not enough people turned up in Southend-on-Sea, in Essex, to set a new record.

Tracy Jones said: "I don't think the terrible weather yesterday and forecast today helped.

"It was a beautiful day but I think a lot of people made up their minds yesterday."

She said the number of women involved was in the hundreds, well below the present record which was set earlier this month when 1,923 women took part in an event in Russia.

The attempt raised money for Southend Hospital's breast cancer appeal.

Ms Jones said: "We did raise lots of money which was great.

"We want to make it an annual event and maybe next year we can get the boys in bikini bottoms, which will be an easier record to break."
