The legendary manager is recovering in intensive care at Salford Royal Hospital after undergoing surgery for a brain haemorrhage.
His former club Manchester United said in a statement that the operation went "very well".
Messages of support for the 76 year-old continue to flood in on social media, with many former players urging him to "be strong Boss".
David Beckham posted a picture on Instagram of himself as a schoolboy with Sir Alex, writing: "Keep fighting Boss.. Sending prayers and love to Cathy and the whole family."
Cristiano Ronaldo also posted a photo with the message "My thoughts and prayers are with you, my dear friend."
Rival football clubs ranging from Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City to AS Roma and Galatasary sent their best wishes, along with foreign managers such as Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri.
The support for Sir Alex also came from other sports, with the US National Basketball Association and the Chicago White Sox baseball team offering their support.
Olympic champion Sir Mo Farah tweeted using the hashtag "legend": "Get well soon Sir Alex Ferguson my support are with family and friends..!!"
Golfer Ian Poulter shared a photograph on his Twitter page of him sitting side-by-side with Sir Alex as he wrote: "Thoughts and prayers go out to Sir Alex Ferguson and family.. wishing him a speedy recovery."
Scotland's First Minister and SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon joined Scottish Tory leader Ruth Davidson in tweeting their best wishes for Sir Alex.
Television presenter Eamonn Holmes, a longtime friend and fervent Manchester United fan, described Sir Alex as an "amazing man".
He tweeted: "Praying for The Boss that he makes a full recovery from his Brain Haemorrhage. So much part of my life personally and professionally for over 30 years. An amazing man and friend."
Sir Alex retired as United manager in May 2013 after winning 38 trophies including 13 Premier League titles, two Champions Leagues, five FA Cups and four League Cups over 26 years.
He was at Old Trafford last weekend for the final visit of Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger. It has been reported he complained of feeling unwell at his home in Wilmslow, Cheshire, on Thursday.
Sir Alex was taken to hospital at 9am yesterday.
