From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Hundreds of British Muslim groups and mosques have issued a joint advert to the press in which they “condemn the Paris attacks unreservedly”.
A total of 129 people were killed and hundreds more were injured in a series of attacks in the French capital on Friday.
The advert, placed in the Daily Telegraph, was organised by the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) on behalf of more than 300 local mosques and community groups.
It read: “The barbaric acts of [Isis] have no sanction in the religion of Islam, which forbids terrorism and the targeting of innocents.
“We re-affirm our commitment to the values of pluralism and tolerance as the best defence against those who seek to create division and fear.”
The advert also said everyone needed to stand together to ensure communities were not turned against each another.
Dr Shuja Shafi, Secretary General of the MCB said: “The advert aims to highlight how Muslims everywhere have consistently and without reservation spoken out against terror. It is important that our fellow Britons hear this message loudly and clearly."
Earlier, Dr Shafi said: “The attacks once again in Paris are horrific and abhorrent, and we condemn this violence in the strongest possible terms. My thoughts and prayers for the families of those killed and injured and for the people of France, our neighbours.”
Since the attacks, a number of mosques around the world have reportedly been attacked including the Bishopbriggs Cultural Centre in East Dunbartonshire, Scotland. The building was set alight and Police Scotland said it was being treated as "wilful fire-raising".
