The A19 in Northumberland was shut in both directions between the Moor Farm and Silverlink roundabouts following the pile ups around on Sunday morning.
A number of people have been taken to hospital but there have been no critical injuries, a spokeswoman with North East Ambulance Service told The Independent.
Around 10 vehicles were involved in total, The Chronicle newspaper reports.
The crashes come just a day after the route was closed following a four car smash, involving a police car.
It is understood the road – which connects South Yorkshire to the North East – will now remain shut into Sunday afternoon.
Northumbria Police tweeted: “The A19 is currently closed in both directions between the Moor Farm Roundabout and the Silverlink roundabout due to accidents in both carriageways involving numerous vehicles. Police, Fire and Ambulance resources are at scene."
