Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

TWO MOTHERS who left their seven children at home when they went on holiday will not be prosecuted, police said last night.

The children, aged between 10 months and 14 years, were placed in foster homes on Monday by social workers.

The women, who live together with the children in Dorking, Surrey, were questioned by police and social workers when they returned home on Wednesday. Surrey police and social services said in a joint statement: 'Police have completed a criminal investigation and there is no evidence to take proceedings.'

The two women, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, have denied leaving the children alone at home. They say they made arrangements for neighbours to look after them and that they wanted their children back.

The joint statement indicated that the children were likely to remain in care for the time being. It added: 'However, the joint investigation into the care of the children will continue until next week.'

The women - thought to be staying at an unknown address - said they had no comment to make.
