From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. DETECTIVES were last night questioning the wife of a gynaecologist whose secretary was stabbed to death in his consulting rooms, writes Graham Moorby.

Officers believe that Fiona Wood, 40, was killed shortly after arriving for work at the offices of Dr Jeremy Wright in Westminster Court, Old Woking, Surrey, yesterday. His wife, Julia, Wright, was arrested and was being questioned in connection with the killing. It is believed detectives are investigating claims of a relationship between the consultant and his secretary.

Dr Wright, who lives in Hook Heath Avenue, Woking, is thought to have raised the alarm after his wife turned up at the town's Nuffield Hospital at about 9.30am.

Shortly before 10am, police broke into the office and found his secretary 's body lying in a pool of blood. A paramedic made an attempt to save her but the woman is believed to have been dashed into the building, but it was too late to save her. She had been dead for at least 40 minutes.

Friends of the Wrights said that Julia, distressed at an alleged affair between Mr Wright and Fiona, had tried to commit suicide by overdosing on pills and driving headlong into a garage door two months ago.

They claimed that Fiona and Mr Wright had also moved in together.

One said: "Jeremy had left his wife to live with his secretary. His wife was

very upset and had tried to commit suicide.

"Julia had only recently come back from America, where she had been trying to get over things."

Rhian Thomas, 34, who works near by, said later: 'The secretary worked alone in the office, handling the administration for the private practice of the gynaecologist.

'It appears that there was a panic button inside the office, but this was not used.'

Mike Hawkins, site manager at Westminster Court, said: It's a terrible thing to happen. She was a very attractive blonde with shoulder length hair.' She was a very nice, pleasant girl liked by everybody in the area, and everybody who knew her.' She would always say hello and take time to talk to

you.
