From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. Susie McCabe has been announced as the winner of a comedy award chosen by Sir Billy Connolly.

The Glasgow-based comic was up for the Sir Billy Connolly Spirit of Glasgow Award at the cityā€™s comedy festival, facing stiff competition from the likes of Raymond Mearns, Rosco McClelland and Susan Riddell.

The shortlist was put together by an independent panel of judges which included last yearā€™s winner Janey Godley and Barbie star Sharon Rooney.

McCabeā€™s win was announced at a gala on Saturday at the Kingā€™s Theatre, with a special video message sent by Sir Billy from his Florida home.

ā€œCongratulations Susie ā€“ Iā€™m sorry I canā€™t be in Glasgow, itā€™s for a million reasons,ā€ he said.

Addressing Ms McCabe, he added: ā€œI watched you on TV and I was blown sideways. Itā€™s been lovely watching your style, that Glasgow style of comedy ā€“ itā€™s brilliant, I loved it. Youā€™re brilliant, so keep it up.ā€

Describing Glasgow as ā€œthe wind in my sailsā€, the winner said: ā€œWhen you start this career as a dare you donā€™t think for a minute youā€™re going to hear your name come out of Billy Connollyā€™s face.

ā€œLots of people talk about Edinburgh and its festivals in comedy ā€“ itā€™s never been about Edinburgh for me, Edinburgh is a by-product of this festival for me. This festival has 100% backed me and itā€™s done that because you, the audiences, have come out and let me play this theatre three times.ā€

She added: ā€œThis means the absolute world to me ā€“ this city means the absolute world to me.ā€

Krista MacDonald, the director of the festival, described McCabe as ā€œone of Scotlandā€™s most exceptional comedy exportsā€, adding that she was ā€œa truly worthy winnerā€.
