At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

However, two hooded men emerge from the vehicle; one - armed with a crowbar - instantly runs to the corner of the house and destroys the CCTV.
Two more masked men emerge to help break down the door of the property in Romford, with one of the suspects armed with a shotgun.
Detectives in Havering have released the CCTV footage of the aggravated burglary on Wallenger Avenue, Romford in the hope that members of the public can identify the four individuals who stole four watches from the property.
Three people were in the house at the time, all in their 20s and early 30s, and received minor injuries from the breaking glass as the four masked assailants broke the door down.
The suspects drove off in a Porsche and a black Mercedes, police said.
Anyone with information about the incident or who can identify any of the men should call Havering CID on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
