From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

AN 'OBSESSIVE' husband was jailed for six years yesterday for killing his young daughter and seriously injuring his estranged wife when he deliberately drove into them in a supermarket car park.

Sandra Laud, four, and her six-year-old brother, Omar, were holding their mother's hand when Everill Laud drove into them in Old Trafford, Manchester, last October.

Yesterday at Manchester Crown Court, Laud, 52, a machinist from Old Trafford, pleaded guilty to the manslaughter, due to diminished responsibility, of his daughter and guilty to the attempted murder of his 36-year-old wife, Pat, who appeared at the hearing on crutches.

The court was told that after the incident, Laud lay down in the car park repeating: 'What have I done? My only daughter.'

Mrs Laud suffered a fractured skull and her right hip was fractured in the incident.

David Turner QC, for the defence, said of Laud: 'When he drove on to the car park he was suffering from an abnormality of mind which impaired his sense of responsibility.'

The judge, Mr Justice Alliott, told Laud yesterday: 'This appalling tragedy stems from your obsessive, morbid jealousy.' He jailed him for six years on both counts, the sentences to run concurrently.
