Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

EIGHT people, including six teenage girls, were injured when two coaches collided and one was forced up the embankment and overturned on the M6 near Sandbach, Cheshire, last night.

The overturned coach was carrying 47 pupils and staff from St John Rigby Sixth Form College, Orrell, Wigan. They were returning from a trip to Alton Towers to mark the end of their exams.

The driver was trapped and had to be released by firemen, while the driver of the other coach, which was empty, was also seriously injured.

It was not immediately known whether the coaches were fitted with rear seat belts. If not, there will be renewed calls for belts to be fitted to all coaches and minibuses.

The accident happened at 6.50pm yesterday as both vehicles were travelling north on the M6 between junctions 16 and 17, just past the Sandbach service station turn-off.

The coach carrying the students was travelling behind the empty coach which is thought to have braked suddenly to avoid a heavy goods vehicle. The empty coach stayed on the motorway while the school coach went up the embankment and overturned.

Two students suffered head injuries, one serious. One had a back injury, and three were suffering from shock.
