From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. A MAN who drove his car into a group of revellers at a carnival was yesterday convicted of dangerous driving and causing actual bodily harm. Leslie Caines, 56, drove into the group when he found a road blocked during the Chapeltown carnival in Leeds, in August last year.
A charge of causing grievous bodily harm with intent was left on file after the jury at Leeds Crown Court failed to agree a verdict. Caines, of Broadlea Street, Bramley, Leeds, denied all charges.
The court was told how Caines sounded his horn and flashed his headlights, but when the road did not clear he drove into the crowd. Several people were injured.
Caines told the court his car darted forward when his foot slipped off the clutch.
Caines yesterday admitted a further charge of drink-driving. Sentence was adjourned pending reports.
