William John McCabe, from Liverpool, appeared at the city's magistrates' court charged with driving his Peugeot 405 with excess alcohol.
Ellen Costello, 34, a mother of four, and Frances Dykes, 40, a mother of two, sisters from Walton, Liverpool, and their cousin Pauline Williams, 40, a mother of four, from Kirkby, Merseyside, were killed in the accident on Monday night.
The three women were walking home from a wake following the funeral of James Riley, father of the two sisters, when they were involved in the accident at a pelican crossing in Kirkdale.
Richard Mitcalf, for the prosecution, asked for the case to be adjourned for two weeks while police inquiries continued.
David Tapp, the magistrate, accepted a request from Valerie Lamont, for the defence, that Mr McCabe's address should not be disclosed in court for his own protection.
The court was told there had been two incidents of disorder during the night and feelings were running high.
Mr McCabe was remanded on bail to an undisclosed bail hostel away from his home area until 24 August.
Reporting restrictions were not lifted.
