The individual names of 118 women killed in the last year have been read in parliament as MPs sat in chilling silence.

Jess Phillips, shadow minister for domestic violence and safeguarding, read the names of women who have been killed since 11 March last year where a man was “convicted or charged” as the “primary perpetrator”.

Speaking to parliament on Thursday, the Labour MP for Birmingham Yardley said: “We don’t currently count dead women.

“No government study is done into the patterns every year or the data of domestic abuse victims who are killed, die by suicide or die suddenly. 

“Dead women is a thing we have all just accepted as part of our daily lives. Dead women is just one of those things. Killed women are not vanishingly rare. Killed women are common.”

Two women a week are killed in England and Wales by a current or ex-partner, while one in four women will suffer domestic abuse at some point during their lives.

A previous study, by the University of Gloucestershire on the relationship between stalking and homicide involving a female victim and male perpetrator, found that in 71 per cent of cases the victim and perpetrator were in, or had previously had, an intimate relationship.

It found stalking was identified in the run-up to 94 per cent of the 358 criminal homicides examined.
