Woman killed in hit-and-run car crash in Brixton
Police watchdog investigating after attempted traffic stop
The police watchdog is investigating after a woman in her 20s died in a hit-and-run car crash in south London.
The pedestrian was pronounced dead after being hit by a car in Brixton Hill at 9.46pm on Wednesday.
Metropolitan Police officers had tried to pull the car over before it sped away, they said in a statement.
The vehicle was found abandoned nearby, and police are still trying to trace the occupants.
No arrests have been made.
The victim has not been formally idenitifed, but her family has been told of her death.
Overnight, the A23 Brixton Hill was closed due to the incident, but it has since reopened.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct has opened an investigation into the crash, the Met added.
A similar incident took place last month in the same street when a young woman in her early 20s was hit and killed.
Last autumn The Independent reported that the number of people killed in crashes involving police vehicles had almost doubled in a year.
Thirty people died during police pursuits and five while officers were responding to emergency calls, figures for 2018-19 showed.
