A woman was arrested over a suspected double poisoning that left one man dead and a woman seriously ill, police said today.

The victims, named in reports as Lakhvinder Cheema, 39, and his fiancee Gurjeeta Kaur, 21, were taken to West Middlesex Hospital in London in the early hours of yesterday morning after they fell ill, Scotland Yard said.

The man was pronounced dead at 2.36am yesterday, while the woman is in a critical condition.

Detectives are questioning a woman in her 40s in connection with the investigation.

A Yard spokesman said: "The suggestion that the victims might have been poisoned is one of the lines of inquiry we are pursuing."

A post-mortem examination will take place at Fulham mortuary this morning.
