Two new charges lodged in Soham murders case
The former teaching assistant of Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman faced two further charges yesterday of covering up for her lover, Ian Huntley, 28, who is accused of murdering the 10-year-olds.
Maxine Carr had faced one count of perverting the course of justice. But yesterday the new charges were on an indictment lodged at the Central Criminal Court, stating that "knowing or believing" Mr Huntley had murdered the two friends or committed another arrestable offence, Ms Carr lied about his and her whereabouts to impede his arrest and prosecution.
Holly and Jessica's disappearance from Soham, Cambridgeshire, in August, led to a huge hunt. Thirteen days later they were found dead near Lakenheath air base, Suffolk. Mr Huntley was the Soham Village College caretaker and his partner had worked at the next-door St Andrew's primary.
The Old Bailey indictment includes a joint charge of conspiracy to pervert justice. The couple are not expected to attend a pre-trial hearing at the end of next week.
Mr Huntley's father, Kevin, 47, has resigned as caretaker at another school. His mother, Lynda, left her job as a cleaner there last year.
