Three people were under investigation today on suspicion of child neglect after the death of an eight-month-old boy.

Police arrested two women, aged 20 and 54, and a 25-year-old man after being called to a house in Kingsteignton, Devon, on July 20.

A Devon and Cornwall Police spokesman said: "Just before 9am on Tuesday July 20 officers attended an address in Kingsteignton having been alerted to the death of an eight-month-old baby boy."

The trio were arrested on suspicion of child neglect and released on bail until September 30 pending further investigations.

Initial post-mortem results were inconclusive and further forensic investigation was needed to establish cause of death, he said.

An investigation is being carried out by police, the county council and other agencies.

A council statement said: "Devon County Council is part of a joint investigation into the death of a young child, which includes police and health agencies. While this investigation is ongoing, we are unable to comment any further."

The family were not known to social services, the council spokesperson said.
