Teenager jailed for punching 16-year-old girlfriend in stomach and causing miscarriage
Dusan Bako dragged the seven-month pregnant girl to a park and attacked her
A teenager has been jailed for punching his pregnant girlfriend in the stomach, causing her to lose the baby.
Dusan Bako, from Oldham, verbally and physically abused the 16-year-old girl in public in August. She was seven months pregnant at the time.
Bako, 18, had called at his girlfriend’s house in the afternoon and asked her to come outside and talk, Greater Manchester Police said.
He became aggressive and grabbed her by the arm, dragging her into nearby Copster Park, where he assaulted her in broad daylight.
A spokesperson said he punched the girl in the stomach and police were called.
The pregnant teenager was taken to hospital but later miscarried.
Detective Chief Inspector Howard Millington said: “This is an exceptionally tragic case that resulted in a 16-year-old girl losing her baby.
“Bako’s incomprehensible actions have left the victim understandably distraught in a way I cannot begin to comprehend or imagine.
“The victim has been very brave in supporting the police investigation and ensuring a violent thug has been brought to justice for his heinous crime.
“To punch a heavily pregnant girl in the stomach is as unthinkable as it is deplorable and I can only say that I hope today’s sentence brings some closure to the girl and her family.”
Bako was sentenced to four years and eight months in a young offender’s institute at Manchester Crown Court on Friday.
He had admitted causing grievous bodily harm with intent.
The tragedy has sparked a fresh appeal from Greater Manchester Police for people to report domestic abuse, whether they are affected or a friend is being harmed.
