Teenage girls arrested after Muslim couple 'racially abused' on Manchester tram

Footage of the incident was viewed more than a million times on social media

Four teenage girls have been arrested after a video was posted online appearing to show a Muslim couple being verbally abused on a tram in Manchester.

The man and woman were with their baby when they were racially abused by a group of passengers on the Metrolink, Greater Manchester Police said.

The incident happened as the service travelled between Shaw and the city centre at around 3.30pm on Friday.

Footage of the altercation was viewed more than a million times after being posted on Facebook.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: “Following enquiries by officers, four girls aged between 16 and 18 have been arrested on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence.

“Further enquiries are ongoing in an effort to identify and arrest the other offenders.”
