A teenager has been charged with manslaughter after she allegedly gave birth and then allowed her baby to die.

The 15-year-old - who cannot be named for legal reasons - appeared before Manchester and Salford Magistrates court charged with concealment of birth, infanticide and manslaughter on Monday 14 December.

Prosecutors allege she failed to give the baby care and medical attention, the Manchester Evening News reports.

District Judge Mark Hadfield - who presided over the case - said: “This is clearly distressing for you appearing in court then having to listen to the legal argument.”

The girl was released on unconditional bail and will appear at Manchester Crown Court on 23 December.
