Tanker driver remanded over train crash
A 38-year-old man appeared in court today accused of endangering railway safety after a level crossing crash between a train and a sewage tanker in which 21 people were injured.
Lithuanian Arvydas Bartasius, of Littleport, Cambridgeshire, appeared before magistrates in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk.
The first of the train's two carriages was derailed in the crash at Little Cornard, Suffolk, on Tuesday.
The 1731 National Express East Anglia service, which was carrying about 20 passengers and thought to have been travelling at between 50mph and 60mph, cut the tanker in two as it made its way from Sudbury, Suffolk, to Marks Tey, Essex, police said.
Tanker driver Bartasius was remanded on conditional bail until October 1, speaking only to confirm personal details.
