One can scarcely take to the motorways of Britain without encountering the name Eddie Stobart, the famous road haulage company. The man who bears its name, however, may become a considerably rarer sight. The multi millionaire Eddie Stobart, 55, faces having his driving licence revoked after being charged with drink-driving.
Stobart, 55, whose father founded the Stobart Group trucking company, was stopped in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, at 2am on Sunday morning. He was taken to Leamington Spa police station. He insisted that the breathalyser reading had been "borderline" and that he had not consumed excessive amounts of alcohol.
"I'm not a big drinker," he said. "I had a few bottles of lager in the afternoon and I hadn't eaten all day. The reading was borderline. I'm going to contest it."
Mr Stobart, said he had been retired for seven years. The company is now owned by his brother, William Stobart, who bought it six years ago.
A spokesperson for Warwickshire Police said: "We can confirm that a 55-year-old South Warwickshire man was arrested on suspicion of driving with excess alcohol in the early hours of Sunday 17 April."
