Former children's services director Sharon Shoesmith said yesterday she was still struggling to live with the aftermath of the Baby P tragedy.
In her first address to a public conference since being sacked as director in Haringey because of the council's failure to heed warning signals, she revealed she faced daily threats and constant "vilification" after the affair. Toddler Peter Connolly, known as Baby P before he could be identified, died at the hands of his mother, stepfather and their lodger after months of abuse.
Ms Shoesmith said at the North of England Education Conference in Blackpool: "The threats made against me and my family and the daily vilification totally obscured the issues we should have been debating."
She also said that one social worker at the centre of the case was "virtually living in hiding," due to threats.
