Police are appealing for a driver who killed a 14-year-old girl and left a 12-year-old injured in a hit-and-run collision to “do the right thing” and hand themselves in.

Jasmyn Chan died as she crossed a road with a group of friends in Sheffield on Friday evening and police have said it is “just a matter of time until we catch this driver”.

Officers are looking into reports that she was trying to help her younger friend move out of the path of the car when the crash occurred.

On Sunday Chief Inspector Stuart Walne, of South Yorkshire Police, said: “I'm grateful for the phone calls coming in to the investigating team.

"We have received a steady flow of information since Friday night and I have a team of officers working through the details to trace the car and, ultimately, the driver involved in the crash that killed Jasmyn Chan.

“I am certain it is just a matter of time until we catch this driver and can ascertain exactly what happened at 9.20pm on Friday night on Normanton Hill.”

He added: “I am also renewing my request to the driver of this car to hand themselves in.

"Put yourself in the situation that Jasmyn's family and friends are now in. Think about what they are going through. Do the right thing and come forward."

Jasmyn – known as Jazzy – was crossing Normanton Hill with four other children when the crash happened, according to friends laying flowers at the scene.

Three of the group of boys and girls made it safely across the road, but Jasmyn and the 12-year-old were hit by the car.

Jasmyn suffered fatal injuries and the other girl was sent to hospital for treatment. Mr Walne said the second girl's injuries were not as serious as first thought and she was released from hospital on Saturday.

Floral tributes have been placed by a signpost near the road and friends came to the spot over the weekend.

Some of the youngsters said Jasmyn had gone to the aid of the younger girl when they were both hit by the vehicle, and police are understood to be investigating this possibility.

One message left with flowers read: "In school, I never saw you without a smile on your face. You brightened up a room just by your presence. You were just a beautiful, smart, young lady with such a kind heart."

The accident happened at the bottom of a long, straight hill on the 30mph road. Skid marks stretching for about 70 metres could clearly be seen on the road surface yesterday.

Officers have said the car has been described as small and dark-coloured, possibly green, and maybe a Volkswagen or a Honda. Mr Walne said it will have damage to the front and the driver's offside.

Jasmyn lived with her parents and younger sister just a few hundred yards from where the crash happened. She was a student at Birley Community College, in Sheffield.
