A sailor has been found dead on board a Royal Navy warship while docked at a naval base, police confirmed today.

The 20-year-old man was found on the mine countermeasures vessel HMS Cattistock at Portsmouth Naval Base, Hampshire, at 4.15pm on Sunday.

It is understood that the sailor died of gunshot wounds but police are not confirming a cause of death until the results of a post-mortem examination are known.

A Hampshire Police spokesman said: "The deceased is a member of Royal Navy personnel.

"The death is not being treated as suspicious.

"A post-mortem is due in the coming week."

A Royal Navy spokesman said the sailor's next of kin had been informed.

He added: "The Royal Navy will be carrying out its own investigation into the death.

"As the police investigation is ongoing, it would be inappropriate for the Royal Navy to comment."
