RSPCA called in after horse neglect claims

The RSPCA was investigating allegations of neglect yesterday at the stable yard of a former racehorse trainer.

RSPCA staff have visited the Green Ridge Stables, in Newmarket, Suffolk, run by Kamil Mahdi and taken away 12 horses, said a spokeswoman for the charity. She said: "We are concerned about the condition of the horses and have called in an independent vet."

The RSPCA was contacted by a neighbour of Mr Mahdi's, Sue Scargill. Mrs Scargill, whose husband is also a race horse trainer, said the horses were in a "poor" state. "They were just standing in their own dirt," she said. "There was no bedding and no water."

A Jockey Club spokesman said the issue was outside its jurisdiction, but that it was acting as a consultant. Mr Mahdi is no longer a licensed trainer or registered owner, he said.

Mr Mahdi was not available for comment.
