Royal wedding protesters lose arrest claim

A group of anti-monarchy protesters who were arrested before the royal wedding lost their High Court claim yesterday.

The group, who were released after the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's "balcony kiss", claimed they were the victims of unlawful searches and arrests.

But two judges ruled that the Metropolitan Police had acted within its powers. Lord Justice Richards and Mr Justice Openshaw, sitting in London, dismissed applications for judicial review, saying: "We find nothing in the various strands of the claimants' case … to make good the contention that the policing of the royal wedding involved an unlawful policy."
