A jury failed to reach a decision today in the trial of a fireman who drove through a red light on an emergency call, hitting a car and fatally injuring the driver.
Robert Hulatt, 28, was charged with causing death by dangerous driving after the fire engine he was driving crashed into a car driven by Lateef Kadri Sheikh on September 11 2009.
Mr Sheikh, 52, who was on the school run with his wife and three daughters, suffered chest and brain injuries and died almost a month after the crash.
A trial at Luton Crown Court heard Hulatt was driving to a house fire at the end of a night shift when he hit the car.
The prosecution says he should have slowed down because he had no view of one side of the junction but Hulatt, of Bromham, Bedfordshire, said he thought his route was clear when he crossed the junction. He denied causing death by dangerous driving.
But today a court official said the jury had failed to reach a verdict and a retrial will be held in the New Year on a date to be fixed.
