Recorded crime falls by 8 per cent

Crime recorded by the police fell by 8% to 4.34 million crimes in the last year, official figures showed today.

Violent crimes against the person were down 4% from 903,400 to 871,700, and violent crimes leading to an injury were down 5%, from 421,000 to 401,700, figures published by the Ministry of Justice showed.

But the number of recorded rapes against women rose 15%, up from 12,100 to 14,000, and the number of sexual offences was up 6% from 51,400 to 54,500.
