A man suffered serious shotgun wounds after being targeted outside his house, police said.
The 24-year-old was shot in Winsley Road, Matson, Gloucester, by a man described as wearing dark clothing, a hood and a mask.
Officers were alerted at around 11.20pm on Friday following a report of a man exiting a dark green saloon car and carrying a gun.
The man is believed to have shot his victim before driving away in the direction of the Musket pub.
He was treated by paramedics at the scene and taken to hospital with serious shotgun wounds to the legs.
A Gloucestershire Police spokesman said the man was currently in a stable but not life-threatening condition.
Detective Chief Inspector Neil Kelly said: "Firstly I would like to stress to the local community that incidents like this are very rare in Gloucestershire and that we do not believe this was a random shooting.
"Officers will be speaking to residents in the area to answer any concerns they have and help reassure them.
"We are currently doing everything we can to identify the offender. Forensic searches at the scene are continuing and we are speaking to witnesses, conducting house-to-house inquiries and checking CCTV in the area."
The car is believed to have a part registration number P664.
