A 31-year-old man who was jailed indefinitely for public protection was found hanging in his cell, the Prison Service said today.

Kenneth Bates, who was told he must serve a minimum of five years for wounding with intent and causing grievous bodily harm, was found in his cell at the Category C Gartree jail in Market Harborough, Leicestershire, yesterday.

Staff and paramedics tried to resuscitate him but he was pronounced dead shortly after 8.30am.

A Prison Service spokeswoman said: "HMP Gartree prisoner Kenneth Bates was found hanging in his cell on Sunday October 10.

"Staff and paramedics attended and attempted to resuscitate him; however he was pronounced dead on at 8.35am.

"As with all deaths in custody, the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman will conduct an investigation."
