Police shoot man dead in east London

A man was shot dead today by police in east London, Scotland Yard said today.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: "Police were called at approximately 1.40pm to an address in Romford.

"Armed police attended at the request of borough officers. A man has been shot dead by police. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

"The Directorate of Professional Standards has been informed and officers are at the scene. The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) has been informed."

An IPCC spokeswoman said: "We are aware of a fatal shooting of a man in Romford by officers from the Metropolitan Police Service today, Wednesday October 29.

"IPCC investigators are currently on their way to the scene and will assess the circumstances this afternoon.

"No further information is available at this stage."

One neighbour in Honeysuckle Close, Romford, who did not want to be named, described seeing a police helicopter overhead.

She said: "I saw the police here and I just stayed out of the way. They blocked the square off and the helicopter was overhead."

Honeysuckle Close is a residential estate in the Harold Hill area of Romford that backs on to a park.
