Police probe motorway death of man
Police were today appealing for information after a man in his 60s was killed in an apparent hit-and-run incident when his car smashed into a motorway embankment, overturned and caught fire.
Police are trying to trace the driver of another car involved in the collision, who drove away from the scene afterwards.
The crash victim, who was the sole occupant of a yellow Citroen, died at the scene on the M3.
His next of kin have been informed but his identity has not been confirmed.
Surrey Police are appealing for witnesses to a red Mazda leaving the scene, between junction three at Lightwater and four at Frimley, just before 8.30am yesterday.
A grey BMW was also involved and investigators are trying to establish the nature of the incident, which saw the Citroen leave the carriageway and crash into bushes off the hard shoulder.
A police spokesman said: "Police are very keen to identify the driver of the pillar box red-coloured Mazda RX8 which did not remain at the scene following the collision.
"The M3 southbound carriageway was closed for a number of hours while an investigation into the collision was carried out."
