Police allowed a convicted rapist to work as an English teacher because they thought he had settled down in a "steady" relationship, a court heard yesterday.

Police allowed a convicted rapist to work as an English teacher because they thought he had settled down in a "steady" relationship, a court heard yesterday.

Mark Bradshaw, who was jailed for 11 years for two sex attacks in the 1990s, had no qualifications but secured a job teaching English to foreign students at the London Skills Institute with a CV full of lies.

The Inner London Crown Court heard that officers sat on his secret for nearly six months after the institute, in Kentish Town, north London, had asked them if there was any truth in an anonymous letter it received in June 2003 stating he was a convicted sex offender. It was only after a journalist threatened to publish an article about Bradshaw that the institute was told of the danger.

Judge Colin Smith jailed Bradshaw, 45, of Stoke Newington, for eight months after he admitted using deception to get the teaching job.

Bradshaw raped a woman in a minicab office in 1991 and was jailed for six years. Then, in 1995, while on home leave, he attempted to rape a second. He served a total of 11 years.
